Fluid flows can be encountered in all aspects of our daily life, so the investigation of the fluid mechanics is very useful for improving the performance of various machines and solving environmental problems. In our laboratory, we develop computational methods to deal with the complex flow phenomena (turbulence, multiphase/phase change flows, etc.) and develop control methods to improve the performance of environmental and energy devices.

Jet

We are investigating the phenomena and applications of jet flows and their control techniques. Wind tunnels, water tanks, and air compressors for supersonic flow generation are available in our laboratory. In the numerical simulations, we use dynamic mode decomposition and machine learning to analyze the flow motions.

Energy-loss reduction

In the flow paths in plants and infrastructures, large energy losses occur at the corner elements. In our laboratory, we are reducing the energy loss by placing a small weir-like obstacles near the corners. We have confirmed the effectiveness of our techniques in T-pipes, folded channels, and elbow ducts. We are conducting water flow experiments using a channel model and numerical simulations using OpenFOAM.

Multiphase flows

Numerical simulation techniques for multiphase flows (flows in which multiple phases exist simultaneously, such as gas, liquid, and solid) are still in their infancy. In this study, we are proposing methods to simulate the complex multiphase flow phenomena (boiling, atomization, solidification, etc.) using Diffusion Interface Model (DIM).
